I created The Longest View as a place to think about current events in a historical context.  I spend much of my intellectual life in the nineteenth century, and I’m constantly seeing connections between the world in which we’re living now and the past, distant and not-so-distant.

When I’m not on this blog, I teach American literatures in the English Department at Hunter College, CUNY. I’ve published a couple of books. I also write poetry, and I’m learning to play the guitar. I live in Brooklyn with my partner, two kids, two cats, and a basement full of home-canned goods and power tools.
